Aluminum wiring repair cost: what affects the quote.
Start with a qualified electrician’s assessment of your home. Confirm the repair scope and the documents your insurer needs before arranging the work.

What affects the cost of aluminum wiring repair?
Mostly the repair method and how many connections the home has. No two homes price the same, so a figure from a general guide is not a quote for yours.
- The method. Replacing the aluminum branch wiring with copper means opening walls and ceilings. Repairing at the connections with a listed connector, such as AlumiConn, leaves the wiring in place. See how the repair methods compare.
- The number of connections. A connection repair covers every outlet, switch, light fixture, and junction on the aluminum circuits, so a larger home has more to do.
- Access. Crowded boxes, concealed junctions, and finished surfaces add time.
- Permits and restoration. Ask who pulls the permit and who repairs finishes afterward.
- Certification. An engineer's certification, when an insurer or lender asks for one, is quoted separately from the electrical work.
Is it cheaper to pigtail aluminum wiring than to replace it?
Repairing at the connections is less work than rewiring the house, but the connector matters more than the price. Ask each electrician which connector the quote is based on and whether it is listed for joining aluminum to copper, then ask your insurer which repairs it accepts. Compare the methods before you compare prices.
What should a repair proposal cover?
- The wiring and connections included in the assessment and proposed work.
- The repair method, product instructions, and qualifications needed for installation.
- Access requirements, concealed areas, and any work excluded from the proposal.
- Responsibility for permits, finish restoration, and completion records.
- Any separate inspection or engineering documentation your insurer requests.
Repair work and engineering certification
The electrical professional evaluates and performs the agreed electrical work. An engineer addresses the requested engineering scope. Ask your insurer or lender for its written requirement and share it with the professionals preparing the proposals.
A product purchase or installation receipt does not by itself establish that every requested repair or review has been completed. Keep the scope, invoices, and professional records together.
What to send when requesting help
Provide the property address, available repair records, the insurer’s exact request, and your desired timing. State whether you need help arranging the electrical work or already have a completed repair that requires engineering review.
Can I use a general guide to decide on repairs?
Use CPSC’s aluminum wiring guidance as background. Have a qualified electrical professional assess the home and explain the appropriate work. Do not open electrical boxes or disturb wiring to prepare a quote request.
Prepare your next step
Read the insurance document checklist or the buyer preparation guide.
